My Internet Life - Email/IM/Friends
Since the day I listened this classic song - Hotel California, my mind totally immersed in recall mode. Today I want to talk about my personal internet life, the footprint of myself on the internet.
I have my own personal computer (PC) in the year of 2000. The brand of this computer is Founder. It costs $2235 based on today's exchange rate. Very expensive, I know. The PCs' price keeps dropping these years, the price I paid for this computer is very reasonable several years ago. I appreciate this computer very much. Because of it, I could swim in the sea of the internet. I was such a beginner of the computer world that I even hardly typing before I own my first PC. Thanks to this PC, I could write my own blog today.
When I learned how to surf online, I visited domestic Chinese website all the time. As time goes, Western culture impact my mind more and more. Around in 2005, I started to use American companies web services. These are my "First Ever"s non-domestic web services:
My 1st Email: Hotmail
My 1st instant message service: MSN
My 1st internet friend: QQ friends
I tend to remember everything of my first. Because, these "first"s give me a brand new experience in my life. Now I will talk about them in details.
Emails
My 1st non-domestic email address was registered at Hotmail by Microsoft Company. The Hotmail email service is integrated with the instant message service. So I got a chatting account at the same time when I apply my email account. I use the Hotmail email service because it was so "hot" among my friends. Almost everyone has a email address like yourname@hotmail.com. Many of my friends recommend the Hotmail service to me, since we could use the instant message chatting online as well. In addition, the suffix makes the owner looks like a "white collar". Compare to domestic email services, the Hotmail users are deem as more educated and professional then. In another word, people feel honor if they are the users of Hotmail. Years ago, not only I gave out everybody my Hotmail email address, but also I leave my email in my BBS signatures to show off. I was a loyal user until I meet Gmail. The Gmail makes I realize the email interface could be such efficient. In 2006, a friend of my gave me an invitation code of Gmail, I started my Google journey. Due to Gmail's clean and neat interface, most IT professions and Geeks use it. As a person who don't have any IT skill at all, I felt so cool to have a Gmail account! I was attracted by its powerful folder organize ability. Hence I switch my main email address to Gmail. However, such a good service was sacrificed because the interference of the Chinese GFW. To open the inbox of Gmail is slower and slower. Sometimes it takes more than 10 minutes to open, or even can't open. If you were me, will you crazy? Checking email is a tough job for me then, so I switch back to the service of Hotmail in spite of I prefer Gmail. But the good news is, nowadays the Hotmail is updated to outlook.com online email service. The new metro style outlook.com is very neat. I enjoy this big improvement.
Instant Messages
As I mentioned above, along with my email, I got my 1st instant message service from Microsoft as well. It called "MSN Messenger". Most of my phone's contacts - my schoolmates, my friends, my relatives are on the list of my MSN friends. My MSN friends list also include people that are not my "real contacts" like someone I meet online. Like the role of Social Network Sites (SNS) play today, MSN connect people together. Everyday, my MSN contacts greet each other in the morning, share moments in the noon, chat in the afternoon. Thanks to MSN, I could feel my friends are all around. Meanwhile, unlike the dangerous of SNS, MSN would not release too much users' privacy, which makes me feel comfortable as a user. However, the service was shut down by Microsoft in 2014 in China. To be honest, I miss MSN so much! I can't forget the "mysterious man" image of MSN. The man is grey if the person is offline, and he changes to green or blue when if the user is online. It was such a funny time that every morning I observe my friends "come" one by one. People are addict to SNS now, I was bind with MSN years ago.
Internet Friends
Meeting internet friends is fun activity. I only meet several domestic internet friends when I was a teenager. I meet all of them through Tencent QQ. It is a very popular instant message software in China. The meetings with my online friends were very exciting and enjoyable. We hang out together, eat the food we all like, go shopping etc,. I appreciate internet since it offers the chance that of meeting new friends come from everywhere. I know many people even have oversea online friends. Some of them speak different languages. They chat in English despite neither of them are English native speakers. While chatting, both of them could practice English at the same time. Hence it is possible that people from different parts of the world become friends. Meeting international online friends is unique experience as well. One of my friend has ever met online friends come from America, Australia, Korea, Brazil, Philippine and so on. Amazing, isn't it? I wish I could have internet online friends too. I do have some foreign friends, but all of them are met in real life rather than the virtual world. Currently, SNS is the trend. People could make friends with "friends of friends" or any random person they are interested. However, due to the appear of video chatting, many business could be done online. I don't know whether people will make an appointment with online friends, to meet and sit down to drink a cup of coffee any more. Therefore, SNS seems only connect people within virtual world.
