Tips For Driving In Beijing
If you will drive in China, I would like to give you some tips.
Practice street parking skill. ( The road always very busy)
I am a good driver when I was in China. I got lots of compliment from relatives, friends, and strangers. Not only because my driving is steadily, but also because my parking skill is good. I could park the car into the street parking space easily. I mean, there have cars both in front and behind the spot. Leave a room for one car only. You know it is a hard job when you try to park on crowned streets. It takes some time for some people to park on the curb side. Parking on the curb side in downtown is a tough job for some of my friends. We have to switch seat so I could help them parking. My experience is, back up to the small parking space is much easier. If the room is too small, you could ask the people who charge you the parking fee to push the cars around you. Sometimes they need drivers leave the parking brake down, so they could push the car if in need.
Start off early. (The roads always have traffic jam)
As the capital city of China, also as a giant city has more than 21 million people, Beijing has more than 5 million vehicles in 2014. The whole city becomes a huge parking lot during rush hours. Recently, the period of rush hour keep increasing. In 2013 I went back to Beijing to visit my families and friends. I could feel the road in a jam even at 10:30am or 2:00pm. It is essential to start early if you head to an appointment. Since you are the driver, you can't jump out of the car and run to the place when you are late.
Also, please understand the difference traffic habits between Beijing drivers and yours. You can find out it here.
Tips for visitors to Beijing.
If you take a cab, leave early. Not only because the horrible traffic jam, but also because the difficulty to find an available cab.
Close your eyes when you take a cab. If you look out the windows, you will find the cars around you may drive toward to different direction, this might scared you. But don't worry, the taxi drivers used to it, they know how to keep driving. If you are too scared, close your eyes and have a nap.
Take bus. The buses have their own express lane. But it can't insure you would arrive on time. Since many buses use one lane, the express lane is faster than others, but no always. If you are on a crowd bus without AC in summer, you would remember your adventure forever.
Use subway. The advantage of subway is on time, fast, and cheap. The disadvantage is it is extremely crowed in rush hours. It is hard to get on the train, or impossible to get out of the train.
These are my tips for you. My advises based on my personal experience when I was in Beijing. As time goes, the situation may change. Understand the horrible traffic in Beijing, don't let the traffic ruin your trip. You will have lots of fun there.
